I have to ask, are you modeling this as a full 3d scene that can be rotated or are you interested merely in this particular angle?
>> Giraffe 01/27/10(Wed)19:06 No.11516

No, we're planning to make a navigable 3d environment. Like a game.

wat. I planned on not making much detail because I thought we're focusing on original angle.
>> Anonymous 01/27/10(Wed)19:08 No.11525

Are you kidding me? This shit looks hard enough as it, let alone if it were a 3d environment. I don't want to even think about how you'll texture it. Then there's the fact that you have to use your imagination for things that aren't visible, and when 30 different imaginations conjoin without proper communication, you have a clusterfuck.

Don't be stupid.

This is a question I always had on my mind about 3D for a game, do you make the models any size you want and then uniform scale to match the model of other artists? Or 3d max has real word units?

In games, it is fairly important that they're all the same scale when they're imported in the engine (so they don't have to be rescaled afterwards by programming). But apart from that, it's little hassle to rescale.
Mostly a set scale is agreed upon beforehand. It's also important because the scale tells how large the details should be and such, mostly a reference model is used for this (ie. human model).

Shouldn't be too much of a hassle to implement.

>> Anonymous 01/27/10(Wed)22:35 No.11962
Sorry bro, but I will have to criticize something because your creativity completely changed what was at the end of that bridge. What originally was a house on top of another house with both of them atop of what looks like a store or a bar, turned out in your design as a single taller house, the second house is just a block of concrete, and the store/bar turned into something circular with an entrance...

Also my bad if that's not the finished project. Just thought I'd point it out since it looked sort of out of place...
>> Everest 01/27/10(Wed)22:38 No.11966

I'll see what I can do, but if you look at the original picture, you can see how small that area is in relation to the rest of the picture.
>> Anonymous 01/27/10(Wed)22:42 No.11971
Indeed. Though those are as I said out of place in my opinion. Everything there's neatly detailed and the circular building with the concrete structure above it ... looks as I mentioned out of place in there.

I took the liberty of numbering everything. We're over 20 people now. I guess number 21 and 22 are the same owner but whatever.

The idea is to keep track of your number, so later when you send in your files you can just name it after your number and the people who put it together will know what's what.

We will also know the number of people working on this, and if we want to make a note to anonymous we can define the object by number.

I just took number 23 myself, i want to ask number 1 if i can have the dotted pilar area, since it's part of the bigger thingy. You could take the bridge which belongs to your industrial railing thing? Never mind if you've already modeled this part :)

Thanks everyone.
NO TEXTURING, EVEN ALPHAS!
If you weant to add some small details, use polies - it doesn't matter if you stray a few hundred over the 20k limit.
Better to have purely meshes, it will be way less complicated to set things up in the end if we don't have a shitload of tetxures to worry about.

PS. here's something from the original thread:

no textures, purely modeled. limit of 20,000 triangles (not wuads!) per person/object.
you will host your .obj at rapidshare/megaupload/etc/etc

compositing/rendering done by whoever weants to do it. then we can get some of the concept artists/whoever to draw over the top of the render.

I would make it longer, and then try and define the lip a little more.

would look nice if you added a bit of warping/deformation to the metal, as if it has had a hard life, up there rattled by the wind and rain and baked in the sun.

when you connect it to the base, I would consider adding in some wires (easily done with the line tool) and a few little details like bolts and such.

Use whatever you want, as long as you can export to .obj. We're going for tris only in case you missed that.

I'm not sure, but I think exporting from Solidworks to an .OBJ format makes the model more complex, as in having more polygons.
>> Shade !!TVhkCJB2ipJ 01/28/10(Thu)11:01 No.13000
Sure, blender is fine. Don't bother learning 3ds max or maya. Stick with that.

>> Anonymous 01/28/10(Thu)11:04 No.13002
SolidWorks is a "solids" modeler which is sort of a hybrid
of nurbs. Nothing wrong with using a nurbs app as long
as it converts to polys well. You might have to clean it
up if it makes too many polys

great stuff, i liike the warping on the top part - the misalignment of edges and so on. perhaps you should follow that through into the concrete support as well - chamfer the edges and give them some variation.
