70 KB mods, damn it. Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)11:33 No.917
This has been happening with increasing regularity over the last week:
    1. Idiot spams board
    2. Janitors ban request him
    3. Janitors say on IRC "any mods around? Someone is spamming"
    4. idiot continues to spam while janitors try to delete all the posts
One idiot yesterday spammed every single board THREE TIMES before he was banned. Someone was just doing with child porn it on /b/, posted at least 4 pictures (and I still don't think he's banned)
    Can you please, PLEASE either
    1. Promote some janitors to mods
    2. Give janitors some way to ban people, at least temporarily (say one hour). Before I left I remember some mention of a system where multiple janitors could ban someone by "combining their power", maybe that should be implemented? (I'm willing to code it!)
    3. GET ON IRC A LITTLE MORE OFTEN PLEASE

The spam on our boards is bad enough but when people can post insanely illegal child porn many many times in a row it's really really bad.
Hey, my report icon just went red...
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)12:19 No.918
Second. I feel like we're constantly being yelled at to be in IRC, yet I've been able to actually contact a mod in there maybe twice in the last few weeks, when I feel like I've been in there trying to find one almost every day. It's really frustrating to see people come back after we ban request them, and to see shit go untouched on boards we don't janitor. I've posted links to a couple threads on other boards that have lasted hours without anyone in IRC doing anything :(

I can't code and I really shouldn't say anything about THAT ANONYMOUS JANITOR ABOVE ME and what he can or can't do, but I agree with his options there 100%.
    >> Anonymous ## Mod 05/11/07(Fri)12:46 No.919
Agreed, simply ban requesting doesn't stop them from posting whatever they want until a moderator gets to the ban request, especially a time of the day when there's no moderators on at all.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)13:24 No.920
That would be nice, floods are annoying as hell and they can go on for hours at a time. Perhaps making it so that when a janitor ban requests someone, that IP can no longer post until a moderator processes the ban request, but he would still able to browse the site in the meantime. To me that is preferable to us being able to give out actual temp bans because it isn't really a punishment but it would keep them from posting crap until a mod either clears it or bans him.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)13:53 No.921
    >>920

Interesting idea. Not sure if it would entirely work, since I've seen so many 'lolz I evaded ur ban' threads, but it would give us some kind of breathing room, especially since I'm sure most of us have to deal with repeat offenders on our boards. Maybe an extra 'suspend posting privilages' button in the case of spammers and the like?
    >> Anonymous ## Mod 05/11/07(Fri)14:08 No.922
You're forgetting a lot of janitors are way too ban-happy and that would cause a lot of inconvenience for the users.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)14:20 No.923
    >>922
That's why it would only stop them from posting, not from browsing. If something doesn't deserve a ban they shouldn't ban request anyway, and I'm sure the mods will yell at them for it if they spam pointless ban requests, so the benefits would far outweigh any inconvenience.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)14:24 No.924
    >>923
I think the only new system I'd want is the banding together to ban or delete. I am all for getting CP posters banned immediately, and I'd love to be able to delete shit on other boards if those janitors aren't around. It seems too stupid to sit there and stare at rule breaking/illegal posts on someone else's board and know you can't do anything about it (as this last week or so has shown.)

Anything else sounds like a hassle that would only end up pissing off everyone.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)15:39 No.925
    >>922
Then these people should not BE janitors. Or at least they should probably be explained the right way to do it, and if they continue doing it wrong they should not be janitors.

That's why a 1 hour tempban might be a good idea. It lets us stop the idiots from posting CP or whatever, and if we were wrong, the mods (whenever they show up) can remove it (or let it expire). If a janitor is doing a lot of 1 hour bans that were over-banning, that should be very obvious.
They don't even have to be full bans, what >>920
suggested would work perfectly fine, I think.

Maybe add a way for janitors to get feedback on their bans? Like have a page where they can see the banrequests that were not accepeted. Right now I don't know if I'm underrequesting or overrequesting unless a mod yells at me on IRC.
(Only really useful in combination with giving janitors more banning power, but would still be nice to have otherwise. Again, I'd be glad to help code this stuff)
    >> Anonymous ## Mod 05/11/07(Fri)16:46 No.926
I think promoting a few more janitors who are constantly in the IRC channel and available throughout the day would be a better option and a lot less work.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)17:56 No.928
How about this? When a user has several of his posts (tracked by IP I would assume) deleted in a short period of time, said user is automatically temp banned for 5-10 minutes. Or after one ban request. Maybe not even banned from reading, just banned from posting. It would slow down floods which is the major problem for when no mods are available.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)18:09 No.929
    >>928
I suggested something like that on IRC a few days back. It's a good idea, but I think 15 is a bit high. More like 5, but do the timeline thing so they aren't at the same time. Ugh. I mean it has to go:
    Post-Delete-Post-Delete-Post-BAN, not
    Post-Post-Post-Post-Delete-Delete-BAN
(So a janitor can't pick a thread full of one guy's posts and delete him for that, he has to be "fighting" the janitors)
    >> Anonymous ## Manager 05/11/07(Fri)19:39 No.930
There's already a system being worked on to solve this very problem.

also when is the last time you've used the board alert system? Any mod with the firefox extension should become aware of any alerts and act on them.

Unfortunately mods can't be on all the time just as you can't be on all the time. Try setting off the highlights of the mods (I know you've done it before) or directly PMing someone. Saying "any mods around" doesn't presently grab anyones attention unless they're looking at the channel.

A major problem is that not every mod is in #janiteam let alone on irc in general. We'll make more of an effort to be in the janitor channel.

    >>930
Like I said, this has apparently been "being worked on" since last December. I'm offering my coding services, because this needs to be done (if nothing else is going to be)
I've never used the board alert system, I don't see what use it is intended for. Massive spamfloods from multiple people at once, maybe? I've never seen that happen. It doesn't seem to be any help for the problem I've mentioned: Banrequests work fine, they just are being ignored. I don't see how flagging a board is going to make mods that aren't online look at my ban requests.

I'll start triggering all the highlights, then.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)20:17 No.932
    >>930

I really don't even know the correct situation to use the board flag. Do I just pop it if some dick starts getting in a repost-delete war because I deleted his precious cock thread, or is it only when several people are invading? Because the former example is the one that gives the most problems. If that's what flag board is for when no mods respond in irc, great!
    >> Anonymous ## Janitor 05/11/07(Fri)21:51 No.933
    >>930
I've run into the CP problem where I can't even get enough reports to make a ban request, which has lead me to some IRC shouting at times. I'll try to use the flag board tool the next time that this problem arises.

As for janitors being promoted to mods: nah.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/07(Fri)23:08 No.934
Maybe the potential for promoting some of us to mod status, but only on our own board might be an idea? Sort of a 'Janitor+' rank? We'd have more power to deal with situations such as these, but there'd be less chance of anything massively disasterous happening if anyone went on a powertrip.
    >> Anonymous ## Manager 05/12/07(Sat)01:54 No.936
Typically I'd say use the board alert feature when there is a flood or something unmanageable on the board.

here are the things I said in the janitor channel

most of you will probably not going to be promoted, but we are trying to improve your tools.

Remember that the entire point of the janitor program is having people around to DELETE stuff, not pseudo-mod or be users with special privileges

The only thing I can do now is let you know that the tools are being upgraded and I have started yelling at all the other mods to be in #janiteam all the time.
    >> Anonymous 05/12/07(Sat)02:11 No.937
    >>936
Right. I delete stuff all the time, I have no problem with that, I understand that's my job.
I'm not complaining about that at all.
I'm complaining about things where the only reason we have to delete it at all is because the ban requests are not getting answered, where we have already escalated it to the point of ban requesting. There's nothing we can do at that point but sit there deleting their reposts and hoping the moderators wake up.
Suggestion #2 (give janitors more powers) was just intended as an alternate solution to the "ban requests are not getting handled" problem.
The problem is not that janitors don't have enough power, it's that people who need bans are not getting them. I don't care how that problem is solved, it just needs to be solved.
    >> Anonymous 05/12/07(Sat)23:06 No.938
    >>937
I agree with that. On my board, there's a troll who basically bashes everything and goes against at least two of the global/board rules in a post. (Generally mixing /b/tardism rules and 'strong opinion tossing' rules) I'm not sure how easy or hard it is to ban him (proxies and all that), but I think I've asked for a ban on him before and he's definitely a repeat offender.

Sometimes every post he makes in a thread has to be deleted because of "kike hate" or claims that one side or the other are "christfags" or "niggerlovers" or some such.
    >> Anonymous 05/13/07(Sun)10:39 No.939
What are you talking about Anonymous? I enjoy playing ban request and delete. Can't keep 4chan clean all the time.
What would be nice... is a better way to view the entire board, like a janitor view. Like today, almost 100ish posts with "DESUx70" and "GO BACK TO BED HAL". No problems manually deleting, but mass deletion wouldn't be so bad I think. /a/ is hit pretty hard with the wave of shit. Hope these new tools you speak of don't suck.

possibly check boxes within each thread and mass delete at the top where the OP is?
